UK must dump US' 'redundant' airport security checks' line: BA Chairman

London, Wed, 27 Oct 2010 ANI

London, Oct 27(ANI): British Airways Chairman Martin Broughton has claimed that some of the security checks faced by passengers in Britain are 'completely redundant' and should be scrapped.

Addressing the annual conference of the UK Airport Operators Association in London, Broughton said that Britain was unnecessarily following American demands for increased security.

"America does not do internally a lot of the things they demand that we do. We shouldn't stand for that. We should say, 'we'll only do things which we consider to be essential and that you Americans also consider essential'," the Telegraph quoted Broughton, as saying.

"We all know there's quite a number of elements in the security programme which are completely redundant and they should be sorted out," he added.

Broughton also said that passengers are needlessly removing their shoes and having their laptops inspected.

He also suggested that differing attitudes towards technology made checks on laptops pointless.

"Take the iPad, they still haven't decided if it is a laptop or it isn't a laptop. So some airports think you should take it out and some think you shouldn't," Broughton said. (ANI)
