Chilean miners could be rescued by 'end of October'

London , Sat, 02 Oct 2010 ANI

London, Oct 2 (ANI): The 33 Chilean miners trapped for almost two months could reportedly be freed by the end of October.

According to Sky News, Chile's mining minister, Laurence Golborne has said that the rescuers are getting closer to miners, drilling deep below the Atacama desert.

"The eventual rescue could come in the second half of October," Golborne said.

The men have been trapped 700 meters underground since August 5 this year.

Rapid progress by the rescue drills has raised expectations of reaching the miners in October instead of November as first thought. Metal cages designed by Chile's navy would reportedly be used to lift up the men to the surface one at a time.

According to doctors, the miners have started exercising so that they could fit into the capsule or the metal cage during the rescue operation. (ANI)
