Zardari-Gilani-Kayani trio vows to protect democratic system in Pak

Islamabad, Tue, 28 Sep 2010 ANI

Islamabad, Sep 28 (ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and COAS General Ashfaq Kayani have vowed to defend and protect the democratic system in the country, and resolve all issues in accordance with the constitution.

Presided over by Zardari, the prevailing political situation in the country was discussed between the officials in the meeting, which went on for over 90 minutes, the Daily Times reported.

The president's spokesman Farhatullah Babar disclosed that the flood relief measures, the ongoing fight against terrorism and the security situation in the country were also discussed in the meeting.

It is noteworthy that the meeting was held at a very crucial time, when not only the government and the Supreme Court are face to face with each other on the issue of re-opening Swiss cases against Zardari, but the rumours about a regime change are also doing the rounds in Pakistan.

In another meeting of the party's MNAs and senators at the Presidency chaired jointly by Zardari and Gilani, the president reiterated that the democratic government would "continue to march forward and complete its term, despite the machinations against us."

Zardari also urged the party members and workers to remain calm and avoid being provoked and continue treading the path of political reconciliation.

"Being a sitting government, the PPP has huge responsibilities and it is our duty to remain calm and not overreact on political provocations," Babar quoted Zardari as saying.

The government was currently focusing on tackling the gigantic task of rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood victims besides creating economic opportunities for the people affected initially by the war on terrorism and now by the devastating floods, Zardari said. (ANI)
