Yeddyurappa to review situation in Karnataka after attack on churches

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Bangalore, Sept 22 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa will review the prevailing law and order situation in the state with his cabinet ministers here today, after the recent attacks on churches.

Even yesterday, a mob had attacked three churches in the city. Earlier, on September 14, suspected activists of Bajrang Dal attacked at least nine churches in the state as a mark of protest against the alleged conversion of Hindus to Christianity.

The incident in Bangalore comes on the heels of a series of attacks against churches in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. In Rajarajeshwari Nagar of the city, some miscreants pelted stones at a statue in a cave outside the Jesus Church.

Two more churches were attacked in the city in separate incidents. Besides, some miscreants entered the St. James church and vandalized church property.

The police said that they were investigating the case, but did not rule out religious hatred as one of the main motives behind the attack.

Meanwhile, blaming the attacks on the churches as laxity on the part of police, the Karnataka Government announced its decision to take strict action against the police officials if any more such incidents took place in the state.

Reacting to the recent violent incidents, former prime minister and state chief minister H.D. Deve Gowda has reportedly demanded dismissal of the BJP government in Karnataka. In a letter to the Centre, he also demanded a ban on Bajrang Dal and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), blaming them for the recent attacks on churches in the state. (ANI)
