Hindus laud election of aboriginal to Australia House of Representatives

Nevada , Tue, 31 Aug 2010 ANI

Nevada (US), Aug 31 (ANI): Hindus have applauded election of first indigenous person to Australia House of Representatives.

Noted Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that although it came very late, "it was a step in the right direction for Australia" and showed that Australians were getting more mature.

Ken Wyatt, 57, who won the Hasluck seat in Western Australia, has reportedly received hate mail.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, has asked Australia to create a "bill of rights" as a high-priority. Australia is one of the few Western countries that does not have a charter of rights.

Australia has reportedly not directly incorporated the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; the International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; or the Convention on the Rights of the Child into Australian law.

Rajan Zed says that Australia seems to be lacking in human rights culture. In order to stay competitive globally, Australia needs to stay at par with developed nations in civil liberties also. Even the banks have charter of "customers' rights" these days. (ANI)
