Lockerbie victims' kin describe Megrahi release anniversary celebration a "kick in the face"

London, Mon, 16 Aug 2010 ANI

London, Aug 16 (ANI): Relatives of those killed in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, has hit out at plans to organise a 'national party' in Libya to celebrate the first anniversary of Ali al-Megrahi's release, calling it a "kick in the face".

Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi would reportedly thank God and pray for those who helped to free him, including former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill as he marks the first anniversary of the Lockerbie bomber's release.

MacAskill's refusal to publish full details of the medical advice it received when making the decision to release al-Megrahi have raised concern among bereaved families.

"MacAskill is a disgrace and has allowed Gaddafi to keep kicking us in the face," The Sun quoted Susan Cohen whose 20-year-old daughter Theodora, was killed in the blast, as saying.

"He should be issuing a statement condemning the celebrations, as should the British and American governments. But I bet they won't," she added.

Al-Megrahi is the only person to have been jailed for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 above the small Scottish town of Lockerbie, which killed 259 people, mostly Americans onboard and 11 on the ground.

Kathleen Flynn, who lost his 21-year-old son John in the attack, said: "I've been incandescent. This is the craziest thing in the world." (ANI)
