Wyclef Jean vows to boost English teaching in Haiti

London, Sat, 07 Aug 2010 ANI

London, Aug 7 (ANI): Wyclef Jean has vowed to boost the teaching of English in Haiti if he wins his bid for the presidency.

The 'Fugees' star has confirmed that he wants to fight for leadership of his homeland, and filed election papers confirming his candidacy.

He has brushed off accusations he will struggle to interact with the mainly French and Creole-speaking citizens, insisting he wants to encourage them to use English as a third language.

"What about my French... seriously, we've had years and years of politicians speaking French. And where has that gotten us? So I do believe that this population should speak French. It should speak Creole. It should also learn English," the Daily Star quoted Jean as telling U.S. TV show Larry King Live.

"I left Haiti when I was nine years old. I came to the United States of America. I'm proud that I learned English.

And I'm proud when I go back to my country - when I'm communicating with these people in (Creole)," he added. (ANI)
