London, August 7 (ANI): The Sri Lankan police has arrested Sakvithi Weerakumara Ranasinghe, one of the most wanted fraudsters in the country involved in a multi-million dollar investment scam.
Ranasinghe and his wife were detained near Colombo.
According to the BBC, his case is the most high-profile fraud investigation to be carried out by police for over a decade.
The authorities had earlier sought the help of the Interpol to nab the suspect. Police has received over 2,000 complaints against him so far.
Thousands of people had deposited large amounts of money into his construction company, including sports personalities, senior policemen and military personnel. They were offered high returns through the company's pyramid form of investment, which however, never materialized.
Ranasinghe used a photo of himself with President Mahinda Rajapaksa in newspaper advertisements to attract investors. (ANI)
