'Klutz' Cameron erroneously claims Iran possesses nuke weapon

London , Fri, 06 Aug 2010 ANI

London, August 6 (ANI): British Prime Minister David Cameron has been accused of being a "foreign policy klutz" after mistakenly claiming that Iran possesses a nuclear weapon.

According to The Telegraph, Cameron made his Iran blunder when asked why he was backing Turkey to join the European Union, to which he answered by saying, "I hope that this could help solve global problems like the Middle East peace process, like the fact that Iran has got a nuclear weapon".

Downing Street has admitted that Cameron had "misspoken" during a question and answer session with voters "PM Direct" in Brighton when he suggested that the Islamic Republic, which is seeking to develop a nuclear capacity, was already in possession of a bomb.

Cameron had meant to say that Iran appears to be trying to pursue a nuclear program, according to Downing Street.

Labour party leaders have objected to his comment.

"Considering Iran's nuclear ambitions constitute one of the most important foreign policy challenges facing us all, it is not just downright embarrassing that the Prime Minister has made this basic mistake, it's dangerous," Labour former Europe minister Chris Bryant said.

He also said that the Prime Minister was gaining a reputation as a "foreign policy klutz" who had his feet "firmly planted in his mouth". (ANI)
