Wasteful Brits 'dump millions of tonnes of healthy fruit, veggies every year'

London, Sun, 01 Aug 2010 ANI

London, Aug 1 (ANI): New figures have revealed that Brits throw away millions of tonnes of healthy fruit and vegetables every year, but are less likely to dump booze or sugary snacks.

The statistics have shown that fifth of fruit and almost a quarter of vegetable is chucked - despite still being edible - only six per cent of drinkable alcohol is discarded.

That also makes it the least wasted nutrient, just ahead of non-milk extrinsic sugars - which are found in sweets, biscuits and cakes, reports News of the World.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs statistics show that overall Brits dump 15 per cent of usable food.

This includes almost a third of bread, a quarter of potatoes, 17 per cent of cereals and 13 per cent of meat and fish, along with just eight per cent of dairy products. (ANI)
