Malay Indian temples should also promote community activities

Kuala Lumpur , Tue, 27 Jul 2010 ANI

Kuala Lumpur, July 27 (ANI): Indian temples throughout Malaysia should not only concentrate on religious festivals and prayers, but also become community-based centers, the Tamil Nesan newspaper has quoted Malaysian Hindu Sangam president R.S. Mohan Shan, as saying.

Mohan Shan issued the appeal at the 33rd annual delegates' conference in Ipoh.

He said temple committees should have religious libraries, kindergartens, hold religious classes, motivational seminars and promote activities for the younger generation related to Indian customs and traditions.

"The Government must recognise the MHS (Malaysian Hindu Sangam) as the main body representing the Indian community and its representative must be appointed to the Prime Minister's Department Indian Affairs Advisory Council," The Star quoted Mohan Shan, as saying.

He said that more grants must be given to the MHS so that it could conduct the necessary training for local priests to overcome the shortage in future. (ANI)
