Iran pressurizes convicted woman to reveal campaigners names

London , Thu, 22 Jul 2010 ANI

London, July 22 (ANI): Iran is pressurizing Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the woman it sentenced to death by stoning last month on charges of adultery, to reveal the names of the human right campaigners who are in touch with her family and circulated her photographs to the media in the hope of rescueing her.

According to The Guardian, her family complained that she is under constant pressure from the authorities to reveal the name of the campaigners fighting for her rights.

"Sakineh has been under big pressure since the world has paid attention to her case, recently she was questioned and asked to advise her children to remain silent, otherwise they will be arrested too. International attention is the only hope for Sakineh's release", a source close to her family, said.

She has been interrogated in the Tabriz prison demanding the campaigners' names, approached by her children, who have highlighted the case in the international arena for her release.

Mohammad Mostafaei has issued a statement saying that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has been acquitted of murdering her husband, and the execution by hanging has not been mentioned in her final official sentence but her fate is currently unclear.

Mostafaei said he has received a letter from the Iranian intelligence service summoning him to a meeting in Evin Prison in the next three days to "clarify certain issues".

Sakineh's photo, which has been distributed all over the world, has become a defining image for human rights activists campaigning against stoning in Iran, and eventually forced Iran's judiciary to halt the decision of 'death by stoning', but she still faces execution by hanging.

Earlier, Sakineh received 99 lashes, but was subsequently accused of adultery during the trial of a man accused of murdering her husband. Iran's judiciary has said Sakineh faces execution by hanging "because she is convicted of murder". (ANI)
