Gilani orders inquiry over Baloch leader's murder amidst massive criticism

Islamabad, Thu, 15 Jul 2010 ANI

Islamabad, July 15 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has ordered a judicial inquiry into the broad day light murder of Balochistan National Party (BNP) secretary general Habib Jalib amidst massive discontent being expressed over the deteriorating law and order conditions in the province from various quarters.

Jalib was shot dead near his house in Quetta by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday.

Gilani called Balochistan Chief Minister Nawaz Muhammed Aslam Raisani and asked him to initiate all steps to nab Jalib's attackers.

"The real perpetrators of this cold blooded murder must be apprehended and brought to justice. Those involved in such heinous crimes have anti-state designs and want to create disturbance in the society with the aim of destabilising the country," Gilani said.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has called a meeting to discuss the law and order situation in Balochistan next week to review the situation arising in the region after Jalib's murder.

Earlier, holding the government functionaries responsible for Jalib's assassination senior BNP-M leader Akhtar Mengal said that the security forces have re-established violent organisations for eliminating political opponents.

"The BNP-M does not expect good things from a government of fake degree holders," Mengal said.

Condemning the incident, former Information Minister Sherry Rehman described Jalib's murder as a 'dangerous trend.'

"This (killing) is part of a series of politically-motivated murders in Balochistan, and marks a tragic and dangerous trend in a province that is burning with dispossession and anger," The Daily Times quoted Rehman, as saying.

She urged the government to act swiftly to find the perpetrators warning that failure in doing so would only fuel dissent and alienation among the Baloch people. (ANI)
