Kuala Lumpur, Jul 5 (ANI): Malaysian Indian Congress president S. Samy Vellu, who has been the party president for 31 years, said he had faced many storms in his life and nothing could shake him off as president of the MIC.
"No one can do anything to me and the party. And anyone who tries to destroy the party, fate will ensure that they themselves are destroyed," he said while opening the general assembly of the party's four wings here on Sunday.
Vellu has been at the helm of the largest Indian-based political party since 1979, when he became the acting president after the death of then president V. Manikavasagam.
He said the MIC does not take action against its critics but only against those who try to destroy the party, The New Strait Times reports.
He feigned ignorance when asked about Gerakan Anti-Samy Vellu (GAS).
"GAS? I don't know anything about it. Are you asking me about Esso Gass or Shell Gas?" Samy Vellu quipped.
In Klang, more than 50 people said to be Samy Vellu's supporters gate crashed the "Dawn for Indian Community" gathering at Dewan Hamzah here to confront more than 1,000 GAS supporters.
The gatecrashers warned leaders of the movement not to touch or say anything about the party president.
K.P Samy and Mugilan are among the four instrumental in the forming of GAS.
The other two are former central working committee member G. Kumar Aamaan and former Petaling Jaya Barat MIC chief V. Subramaniam a.k.a. Bharat Maniam. (ANI)
