Lahore, June 22(ANI): In an incredible turn around, and tacitly admitting that the 'banned' Jamaat-Al-Daawa outfit came under the terror group scanner, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Pervaiz Rashid has said that the Punjab government has not given any grant to the group, as it is following a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.
Rashid said that the budget document for the year 2010-2011 was itself a proof about the decision.
He also said that all institutions running under the organization had been taken over by the Punjab government after the United Nations directed it to do so, The Nation reports.
Rashid said that the organization was carrying out some relief work such as operating schools and dispensaries.
Earlier, official documents had revealed that Punjab government provided Rs 82.77 million to Jamaat-ud-Dawah and its allied institutions during the last fiscal year.
The supplementary budget tabled in the Punjab assembly for approval revealed that the PML-N-led provincial government made a grant of over 79 million rupees to the JuD headquarters Markaz-i-Tayyaba in Muridke, and another three million rupees went to different schools run by the JuD in Punjab.
Jamaat-Al-Daawa is seen as the political parent of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, one of the largest and most active Islamist militant organizations in South Asia.
Lashkar-e-Taiba was the primary suspect behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
The lone surviving gunman of the attacks, Ajmal Amir Kasab, captured by Indian authorities has admitted that the attacks were planned and executed by the organization
The organization is banned as a terrorist organization by India, Pakistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Russia and Australia.
As of December 2008 U.S. intelligence officials believed that Pakistan's main intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), continued to give LeT intelligence help and protection. (ANI)
