London, Sun, 20 Jun 2010 ANI

London June 20 (ANI): World Light-Welterweight boxing champion Amir Khan has expreesed his fears that he could be kidnapped in Pakistan while on a visit to his family in that country.

Khan rose to fame as Britain's only boxing representative at the 2004 Athens Olympics, winning a silver medal at the age of 17 in the lightweight boxing category.

"Amir is determined to visit Pakistan over the summer to see where his family originates from, the Daily Star quoted a close associate of Khan as saying.

The 23-year-old boxer fears he could be targeted for a huge ransom. A source close to him also expressed his deep concern about terrorist groups like Taliban could see it as a major coup to have Khan as a prisoner.

"It would give their cause worldwide coverage because Khan is also very popular in the USA", he added.

Khan won the WBA World Light-Welterweight World Championship title by defeating Andreas Kotelnik in a unanimous decision over twelve rounds on July 2009. He is also the former Commonwealth lightweight champion, WBO Intercontinental lightweight champion, and WBA International lightweight champion. (ANI)
