Victoria Police seeking help from woman in Gurshan Singh's death mystery

Melbourne, Tue, 09 Mar 2010 ANI

Melbourne, Mar 9(ANI): Victoria Police has revealed that they are looking for a woman, who is believed to have assisted the three-year-old Indian toddler's murder accused when his car broke down in Melbourne's northern suburbs on last Thursday.

Gurshan Singh is alleged to have been in the car's boot driven by Gursewak Dhillon that afternoon.

Homicide squad detectives want to find the woman who helped Dhillon, when his car ran out of fuel between noon and 3 p.m. somewhere in northern suburbs, The Herald Sun reports.

The woman is said to have taken Dhillon to a service station in her dark green Holden Commdore.

According to the police, the Commodore was seen at the Oaklands Junction about the time the toddler's body was found.

They have appealed to everyone who may have seen the car to urgently contact them.

Meanwhile, Dhillon appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, but did not apply for bail on a charge of manslaughter by criminal negligence.

Wearing a white polo shirt, Dhillon sat quietly in the prisoners dock during the appearance, and nodded when asked by Magistrate Jelena Popovic if he understood the case was being adjourned and that he could apply for bail at any time.

The hearing lasted less than a minute and was adjourned until June 29 with the prosecution asking extra time to prepare the brief of evidence against Dhillon.

Gurshan's body was found near Melbourne Airport on Thursday night, about 30 kilometers from where the toddler disappeared from a house in Lalor six hours earlier.

He arrived in Australia in January with his parents, and was due to return to India this week after father Harjit Singh Channa failed to find work in Melbourne.

It is being claimed that the infant vanished while his mother was having a shower.

Police had earlier said that an autopsy has not determined the cause of death, and there was no evidence of violence on his body, which was found fully-clothed in blue jeans and a gray shirt.

Investigators are believed to be leaning away from the theory that Gurshan had fallen victim to a random attack.

One possibility is that he died of natural causes and someone panicked and disposed of his body. (ANI)
