Auckland, Feb 4(ANI): Relatives of slain India-origin taxi driver Hiren Mohini have said that his death was an "unimaginable and unfathomable event" and described his killer as "barbaric".
The 39-year-old father of two young girls, who died from multiple stab wounds after a frenzied knife attack in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden on Sunday, was described as a hard working and gentle man in his funeral here on Thursday.
A huge cortege of more than 300 taxis with black ribbons on their aerials joined a funeral cortege, while neighbours came out on to the streets to pay their respects.
Mourners spilt out of the front door at the Waikumete cemetery gathering. Inside family, friends, colleagues and dignitaries told stories of the generous man, who had a smile for everyone.
Family members said the support they had received had allowed them to grieve and draw strength and courage through their loss, The New Zealand Herald reports.
One speaker told the gathering that in all his time as a driver Mohini didn't have one complaint made against him, but he had received numerous glowing reviews.
Some drivers, shocked at the brutal death of their colleague, said that they would no longer work at nights, as they were scared of being attacked like Mohini.
It is believed that Mohini picked up his attacker at the central Sky City taxi stand before traveling the short distance to View Rd in Mt Eden. At 1.23 a.m. he pushed the panic button in his cab, sending an emergency alert across the whole Auckland Co-Op network.
Witnesses claim that a young male was seen running towards Esplanade Road immediately after the crash.
According to police, the man they are seeking is described as a slim-built, dark-skinned male in his mid to late twenties with long, greasy hair to the back of his neck.
He was wearing a long-sleeved button-up shirt, dark denim jeans and black leather shoes and was carrying a black bag with a strap. (ANI)
