Deputy Oz PM says there's no excuse for attack on Indian students

Adelaide, Wed, 20 Jan 2010 ANI

Adelaide, Jan.20 (ANI): Seeking to assuage the Indian Government's concerns over attacks on Indian students in Australia, the country's Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, said on Wednesday there is no excuse for justifying the incidents.

Addressing a community cabinet here along with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Gillard admitted the government is in a difficult position, but added that it is doing everything to prevent the increasing 'hate' attacks on the Indians.

Gillard also said that despite the recent spate of violence, the general feedback from nearly half-a-million Indian students was positive about Australia.

"We're absolutely disgusted with some of the violent incidents we've seen involving Indian students. There have clearly been policing problems and the Victorian and NSW police particularly, have been responding," she said.

Gillard said the government is working with the police and various education institutions to educate students about what they can expect in Australia. (ANI)
