Copenhagen, Dec.19 (ANI): The Copenhagen climate summit, which witnessed dramatic turn of events at the 11th hour in a bid by countries to reach some form of consensus on Friday, still seems to be far away from wooing all participating 193 nations to form consensus here over climate change.
Delegates at the climate summit are still battling to prevent the talks ending without reaching a final deal.hough the African Union and small islands have agreed to support the US-BASIC climate proposal in the latest turn of events, the G-77 group led by Sudan has reportedly refused to support it.
It is learnt that Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Norway have come forward in support of the U.S.-BASIC climate proposal.
However, Danish Prime Minister and COP15 president Lars Lxkke Rasmussen .....has said that the U.S.-BASIC (United States, Brazil, South Africa, India, and China) draft on climate change cannot be adopted. "We cannot adopt the U.S.-BASIC deal . We don't have a consensus on the U.S.-BASIC deal" Moreover, Cuba, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Costa Rica have also refused to accept the U.S.-BASIC draft on climate change.
On Friday, the United States, Brazil, South Africa, India, and China reached a last-minute agreement on a number of issues, such as a recognition to limit temperature rises to less than 2C (3.6F).
Earlier, a US-led group of five nations - including China - tabled a last-minute proposal that President Barack Obama called a "meaningful agreement".
The group of a few developing nations felt it failed to deliver the actions needed to halt dangerous climate change.
The majority of nations, however, are urging the Danish hosts to adopt the deal. Despite all said and done, to be accepted as an official UN agreement, the deal needs to be endorsed by all 193 nations at the talks. by Ashok Dixit (ANI)
