KL Bill caveats to ensure that Pak can't use funds for 'fighting wars with India': Kerry

Islamabad, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 ANI

Islamabad, Oct. 20 (ANI): US Senator John Kerry has said that the caveats associated with the Kerry-Lugar Bill were to ensure that Pakistan didn't spend the aid money on arming to "fight wars with India."

During his brief visit to Pakistan, Kerry was asked to clarify the wording with regard to caveats associated with spending the KLB money on Pakistan's nuclear programme.

The News quoted the co-founder of the bill, as saying that those caveats were to make sure that Pakistan did not spend this money on purposes for which it is not intended, like arming to "fight wars with India".

"Pakistan is an independent country and it will spend 7.5 billion dollars aid on its own but though it is the amount of US taxpayers' amount and, therefore, they and some US congressmen ask where the amount would be spent and Hillary Clinton would present report in this regard", he added.

On being asked whether his clarification had found acceptance in the power centres of Pakistan, Kerry said: "As of today, it seems to me that the Pakistani leadership, civil and military, is on the same page." (ANI)
