Pak asks US to write off all its debts

Islamabad, Sat, 06 Jun 2009 ANI

Islamabad, Jun.6 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has urged the United States to write off all its debt to help Islamabad overcome the prevalent economic crisis.

In a meeting with the US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke here, Gilani said Pakistan has been facing a difficult economic situation primarily due to its participation in the US led 'war on terror'.

He said the increasing numbers of displaced people due to the Swat military offensive and the global recession has aggravated the situation for the country.

Gilani also asked Washington to increase the aid being provided to Pakistan as well as fast track the military supplies for Pakistan's campaign against terrorism, The Nation reports.

In reply, Holbrooke said the US would look into Pakistan's request for the debt to be abandoned.

He said measures were being taken to accelerate the pace of military supplies to Pakistan. (ANI)
