Sri Lankan lawmaker says won't give Katchatheevu Island to India
Chennai, April 13 (ANI): Sri Lanka's Sugar Minister, Lakshman Senewiratne, on Sunday (April 12) said that Katchatheevu Island was given to Colombo by Indian government in an agreement and there was no chance of giving it back. Senewiratne, who is on a private visit to Chennai, said that things were going well between the two nations after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the island nation in March this year. However, when asked about the claims made by few political parties in Tamil Nadu about taking back the Katchatheevu Island, whose ownership with Sri Lanka was recognised by India in 1974 on a conditional concord, Senewiratne said both the countries should maintain cordial relations. Katchatheevu is a long-standing dispute between the fishing communities of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
