Viswanathan Anand is an Indian Chess Player and the first Indian to win World Chess Champion. He is also the first Indian Grandmaster.

He was born on 11 December 1969 in Tamil Nadu to Viswanathan Iyer and Susheela and has an elder brother and sister. He took a degree in commerce from Loyola College of Chennai.

He is married to Aruna Anand and has a son Akhil and they live in Spain.

He is the youngest Indian to win International Masters, at the age of 16 he won National Chess Championship and was the first Indian to win World Junior Chess Championship.

He held world Chess Championship from 2000 to 2002 and in 2007-2008. He is one of the six players worldwide to reach 2800 mark in FIDE rating list. He is the only player in Chess history to won all formats Tournament, Match Rapid and Knockout.

He received Arjuna Award in 1985. He was awarded Padma Shri when he became India's first grandmaster in 1987 at the age of 18. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2000. He also was the first recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991-92. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2007 and he was the first sports person to receive it.
