She was born on 7 January 1979 in Delhi but later moved to Kolkata. She began her modeling career at the age of 17. In 2001 she acted in her first Bollywood film in Ajnabee opposite Akshay Kumar. She received Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Besides Hindi language she has appeared in Telugu, Bengali and Tamil language films as well.

Raaz in the year 2002 was her first big hit and she caught the eye for her bold scenes which she continued in Jism released in 2003. She has acted in many hit films like: No Entry, Phir Hera Pheri, Dhoom 2 and Race.

She is also famous for her hot item songs in various films. She is currently working in Singularity, her international debut film and Raaz 3, both of which will release later in 2012.
