Angela Dorothea Kasner or Angela Merkel was born on 17 July 1954 in Hamburg to Horst Kasner and Herlind and has a brother and sister Marcus and Irene. She was first married to Ulrich Merkel but got divorced in 1982 then she married Joachim Sauer in 1998.

From 1991 to 1994 she was a Federal Minister for Women and Youth, from 1994 to 1998 she remained a Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, from 1998 to 2000 she became Secretary General of CDU (Christian Democratic Union) and in 2000 she finally became the chairwoman.

In the year 2005 she became the Chancellor of Germany and was re-elected in 2009.

She was the second woman who chaired the G8 summit. She did so in 2007. She was the President of the European Council at that time.
