Earlier it had an iconic status and studying at Allahabad University was assumed as a matter of pride. During that time it was called ?Oxford of the East?. The university got central university status on June 24, 2005 since then it is constantly on the path of achieving its past glory.

The motto of this central university that is situated in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh is Quot Rami Tot Arbores that means As Many Branches, So Many Trees.

The University of Allahabad was founded in the year 1887. This more than 200 year old university has now numerous departments to its kitty.

Let us have a quick look on the history of Allahabad University. It was first founded by Lord Northbrook, the then Governor-General of India, on December 9, 1873, as the Muir Central College. It was named after Sir William Muir, the then Governor of United Province. Initially if functioned under the University of Calcutta and latter it achieved the university status in the year 1887.

Now the University of Allahabad is a center of learning with various departments of arts science and commerce among various other streams.
