Ustad Zakir Hussain, a renowned name in the world of music and ragas, does not need introduction either in India or abroad. He is one of the legendary tabla players in the world who has the capability to flow a river by the ragas and talas of his music concerts. Indeed his music concerts are unique, and can?t be believed unless it is felt and experienced directly by the onlookers. This gifted musical and rare personality was born on March 9, 1951 in Mumbai to the royal family of Ustad Alla Rakha. His father, who is considered one of the greatest tabla players of the 20th century, was his first guru and remained a life long inspiration for him. Hussain Sahab is bestowed with unusual talent in playing tabla and performing live concerts across the world. With his exceptional performance he has shown his potentials many a times. It seems a tabla not merely remains a musical instrument in his hands, but becomes an apostle of peace and prosperity in the world. His name and fame as an exceptional tabla player not only opened for him the gates of Bollywood, but Hollywood too. He composed, performed and acted as Indian music advisor in Vanaprastham (The Last Dance), which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 along with Saaz and Everybody Says I?m Fine. The same year he received National Heritage Fellowship award?the United State?s most prestigious honour for a master in the traditional arts. Zakir Hussain also composed soundtracks for several movies In Custody and The Mystic Masseur by Ismail Merchant and has also played tabla on the soundtracks of Apocalypse Now, and Little Buddha. Extensively contemplated as the chief architect of the musical Movement of the world, Hussain has been a chief contributor to the music and arts. He has done unique service to music and through it has served as the ambassador of universal brotherhood. His talent is really indefinable.
