The university came into existence in the year 1985 under an act of parliament. From then on the university has become a students and working professionals favorite.

The university is known for offering excellent teaching through open and distance learning mode. In the beginning IGNOU has two programs and 4,528 students from then on the university has increased its enrollment to a great extent.

The IGNOU of today is now serving around 4 million learners and has now operation in 36 countries. Now IGNOU offers a host of courses that ranges from diploma to post-doctoral programs.

The university offers bachelor and master degree programs in humanities, science commerce, computer and several other disciplines. The IGNOU is affiliated with UGC, AICTE, DEC besides international affiliations.

As most of the students fail to get admission in regular courses due to paucity of seats IGNOU provides them opportunity to continue the education. The programs offered by IGNOU have reasonable fees that most of the students can afford without burning a hole in their pocket.
