Kiribati News : Kiribati is an island nation located in the central Pacific Ocean. Kiribati is an archipelago of 32 atolls and one raised coral island. It is dispersed over 3,500,000 square kilometers on both sides of the equator. Gilbert Island is the main island of this archipelago. The islands boast superb white sandy beaches and crystal-clear lagoon waters. Kiribati maintains cordial relations with most countries and has close relations with its Pacific neighbors, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. This close tie-up has helped Kiribati in obtaining considerable foreign aid for its various development needs. In November 1999 it was announced that Japan's National Space Development Agency planned to lease land on Kiritimati (Christmas Island) for 20 years, on which Japan will build a spaceport.
