Vaishali is one of the most significant places in the ancient history where it is believed that Licchavi developed the first republic of the world. It also plays a crucial role during the life of Buddha and it has credit to welcome Buddha in the city who visited here on several occasions. Vaishali, which is situated in the state of Bihar, lies at a distance of about 60 km from the capital Patna.

In fact Vaishali is the place where Buddha announced the imminence of his Mahaparinirvana and it also witnessed one of great events related to life of Gautam Buddha.

Vaishali displays extraordinary and divine presentations of Buddha spirituality, which led to mass induction of people in Buddhism. It has also the credit to be the most important event in Buddhism where induction of females into Sangh started.

Due to its connection from Lord Buddha, Mauryan ruler also gives proper attention to Vaishali. The great ruler Ashoka made a Lion pillar in Kolhua village of Vaishali. The 18.3 m high structure has been made of a highly polished single piece of red sandstone. It is believed that the stupa has been made in commemorates Buddha's last sermon.

There are two Stupas in Vaishali, which is constructed near the sacred ashes of lord Buddha that is enshrined in a stone casket. In 1958, during excavation another casket containing the ashes of Lord Buddha was discovered.

It is believed that Vaishali hosted the second great Buddhist council in ancient time and Stupas were erected to commemorate this event.
