Maoists loot Rs.9.9 mn in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, April 4 (IANS) Armed Maoists looted Rs.9.9 million in cash from the security van of a bank in Orissa's Malkangiri district Saturday, police said.

 

'Around 15 rebels stopped the vehicle of State Bank of India by putting boulders on the road, beat up two security personnel who were in the vehicle and looted the cash,' district police chief Satyabrata Bhoi told IANS on telephone.

 

 

The vehicle carrying cash was going to the Chitrakonda branch from the bank's branch in the district headquarters of Malkangiri, some 620 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

 

 

The rebels then disappeared in a hilly and forested area, Bhoi said.

 

 

Maoists are active in more then half of Orissa 30 districts. Malkangiri district is considered one of their strongholds.
