Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today (April 4) filed his nomination papers for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in the presence of his mother and Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi and close family friend and former cabinet leader Captain Satish Sharma.
He filed four sets of nomination papers at around 12.30 p.m. disclosing all his assets following the rules of filing the nomination at the office of the returning officer in Sultanpur court office.
Following the norms of poll panel rules strictly, none entered into room of the returning officer except his closest. And there he spent half an hour while filling his papers.
Describing his asset in the nomination papers, he disclosed the bank deposits of over Rs 10 lakh in various banks; two farm houses in Mehrauli and Faridabad, two shops at the Metropolitan Mall at Saket (Delhi) and several jewelleries of worth Rs 1.5 lakh.
The Congress MLAs of Rae Bareli and Amethi were the proposers of Rahul Gandhi, while Dr. Sanjay Singh, the party candidate from Sultanpur and Reeta Bahuguna, the president of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee were also present in the collectorate.
Priyanka Gandhi, the sister of Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra, the husband of Priyanka and brother-in-law of Rahul were not present on this occasion because of the death of Robert’s father.
Rahul (38) is contesting the Lok Sabha election for the second time, and this time too he chose Amethi because his father Rajiv Gandhi used to fight all his contests from here. He (Rahul) had entered into active politics after winning the last election in 2004 by a huge margin of 3,00,000 votes.
Sonia Gandhi, on the other hand, fights the election from Rae Bareily, the representing constituency of her mother-in-law and former prime minister late Indira Gandhi. This year too, she is going to fight from the same place. She will file her nomination paper on April 06.
As of now, there seems no challenge for Rahul from Amethi. And it is almost certain that he will win again and might even with a larger margin. But the biggest challenge for Rahul is to carry his party on the winning path in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, from where Congress has decided to fight alone despite a very feeble public base.
Though congress has already stated that Rahul won’t be the Prime Minister if congress gets the power again, political analysts and even the opposition parties know that he would be a strong candidate for PM in future.
