No seat-sharing agreement with Gujarat Congress: NCP

National,Politics, Sat, 04 Apr 2009 IANS

Ahmedabad, April 4 (IANS) The seat-sharing arrangement between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has failed in Gujarat, with the latter Saturday saying it would fight the Lok Sabha polls on its own.

'We have already decided on eight Lok Sabha seats from which our candidates will contest the Lok Sabha polls in Gujarat,' NCP Gujarat chief Jayant Patel told IANS.

He said the decision about the remaining seats would be taken Monday.

The party would now be fielding candidates from Dahod, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Bharuch, Surendranagar, Amreli, Gandhinagar and Surat.

'I was abroad and landed in Ahmedabad in the morning to be informed that only the Surat seat was being offered to the NCP which led to the break-up of the Congress-NCP alliance in Gujarat,' Patel said.

He said the NCP had earlier demanded the Rajkot and Ahmedabad (West) seats but was offered only Surat.

'Our demand in the beginning of March was for eight seats which the Congress rejected and fielded candidates from 25 seats while only offering the Surat seat to the NCP this month,' he pointed out.

Elections for the 26 parliamentary seats in the state will be held in the third phase of polling April 30.
