Jammu, March 29 (IANS) Gujjars, a nomadic tribe in Jammu and Kashmir, Sunday asked the central government to take measures for the development of Gojri, their mother tongue spoken by nearly two-and-a-half-million people in the state.
A resolution seeking inclusion of Gojri into the Eighth Schedule of the Indian constitution was passed at a conference of Gojri writers in Kathua, 80 km north of Jammu.
The conference was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.
The Eighth Schedule to the Indian constitution contains a list of 22 scheduled languages. The government of India is under an obligation to take measures for the development of these languages for their growth in becoming effective means of communication of modern knowledge.
The meeting also demanded that Gojri speaking people should be declared ethno-linguistic minority, a spokesman of the cultural academy said.
