Police remand of Saji Mohan extended by a day

National, Sat, 21 Mar 2009 IANS

Chandigarh, March 21 (IANS) A court here Saturday extended the police remand of tainted Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Saji Mohan, who was caught in a narcotics racket, by one day.

On March 14 the court had sent Mohan to police remand for seven days. He was brought to the court amidst tight security Saturday.

'During the interrogation, police found that Saji had deposited Rs.86,000 in a private bank, in a single month, from where he had taken a home loan. Police have to inquire about the source of that money,' the prosecution lawyer said during the argument, while seeking Mohan's extended remand.

Mohan was brought to Chandigarh March 14 from Mumbai by Chandigarh police to interrogate him in a case of embezzlement of Rs.1.4 million during his tenure here as a zonal director of Narcotics Control Bureau.

Mohan was arrested by Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) officials with 12 kg of heroin from a Mumbai suburb in January.
