New Delhi, Mar 18 (ANI): In wake of increased threat perception from militant groups based in Pakistan trying to disrupt the electoral process, Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor today said that the Army is capable to counter any kind of danger emanating from across the border.
On Wednesday, the Intelligence Bureau warned of increase in threat from across the border to some political leaders during the Lok Sabha elections and plans of militants to disrupt the election process in India.
"Infrastructure of pushing terrorists from across the border remains intact. The Taliban is getting stronger on the Pak-Afghan border and the Army is not worried about it," General Deepak Kapoor said while reacting to a question on rise in activities of the Taliban in Pakistan's tribal areas.ommenting on peaceful conduct of elections in J-K, he was of the view that militancy in Jammu and Kashmir always comprised of 45-50 percent militants being of foreign origin and today also these elements exist there and in this context the Army is not worried about militants coming to our side from the other side.
"The fact remains that currently all passes are closed and infiltration is at a low ebb, but not that withstanding we are ready with counter infiltration posture," said General Kapoor on sidelines of a reception hosted to honour 50 gallantry award winners here.
"We will ensure that no infiltration takes place and environment remains peace for people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their franchise freely," the Army Chief added.
The intelligence agencies have intercepted cross-border "chat" between terrorists with intentions of targeting some political leaders during the elections. There has been a marked increase in talk among the terrorists, about validated attempts to disrupt the election process in India.
The intercepts also suggest, that these terrorists want to target some politicians during the Lok Sabha elections, as it could result in a lot of media attention, sources said. However, they did not identify the leaders facing the terror threat.
Election in India will be held in five phases starting from April 16. At least 71.4 crore citizens out of the country's 112 crore population are eligible to vote in the general elections. By Praful Kumar Singh(ANI)
