Dalai Lama calls for a united struggle for Tibetan cause

Dharamsala, Mon, 09 Mar 2009 ANI

Dharamsala, Mar 9 (ANI): Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has called for a united struggle against the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

"Now, we are in such a state where all the people following Tibetan Buddhist traditions and Tibetans-in-exile should be united. Otherwise, if you remain isolated from one another then the forces, the strength of the unity is lost. So then how can we possibly achieve our goal of Tibetan struggle?" said Dorje, religious translator of the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama was addressing the 10th Religious Conference of four Tibetan Buddhist sects and Yungdrung Bon here to mark his fifty years in exile.

The high Lamas of different Tibetan Buddhist sects attended the three-day conference, which concluded on Sunday.

The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in March 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, only wants greater autonomy for the remote region in China's far west rather than outright independence.

China has ruled remote and mountainous Tibet with an iron hand since People's Liberation Army troops marched into the region in 1950. (ANI)
