Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 21 (IANS) One man was killed here when the police fired at farmers protesting against inadequate compensation paid to them for land acquired from them to build the Yamuna Expressway.
The Uttar Pradesh Police said Tuesday evening that 18 people were also injured in the firing.
The farmers, who were on an indefinite protest at the construction site, blocked a road and tried to take possession of a camp office of the Jaypee Group, which is carrying out the project.
The protest started a fortnight ago with farmers demanding higher compensation for their land acquired to construct the 165-km expressway between Greater Noida and Agra.
On the 16th day of the protest Tuesday, as the farmers tried to enter the camp offices at Mangadhi crossing, the police tried to stop them. Angry farmers stoned the policemen, who opened fire.

About 15 police officers and administrative officials were injured in the clash, the police said. Two police vehicles were set on fire.
Said green activist Ravi Singh in Agra: 'It would have been sensible and economic in the long run to extend the Delhi Metro to Agra instead of going for showpieces like the Yamuna Expressway which will only escalate real estate prices and deprive thousands of farmers of their livelihood.'
