Overwhelming response to police recruitment drive in Kashmir

National, Tue, 20 Jan 2009 IANS

Ganderbal (Jammu and Kashmir), Jan 20 (IANS) Nearly 7,000 youth turned out for a police recruitment drive Tuesday in the north Kashmir district of Ganderbal, which is the assembly constituency of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, officials said.

'The fast track recruitment drive for Ganderbal district was held today. The response has been overwhelming. More than 7,000 youth came to join the police force,' a police officer told IANS at the Police Training School at Haripora.

Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda flew in from winter capital Jammu for the selection process and candidates from across the district began coming to the recruitment centre at Haripora since the early hours of the morning.

The officer added that similar fast track recruitment drives would be held in every district of the state to give the youth a chance to serve the public.

'If anybody wants to know why we voted during the elections, let him come and see the massive unemployment here. In Ganderbal district alone, there must be more than 30,000 unemployed youth with degrees,' said Bashir Ahmad, a 26-year-old science postgraduate who applied for a constable's job for which the basic qualification is just matriculation.

'If people with higher qualifications are selected for a constable's job, then that means we, with just a matriculation certificate, stand no chance anywhere,' said Ajaz Ahmad, who said he had come to the centre at 3 a.m.

The normal procedure for the DGP's special recruitment drive is that candidates are selected and given employment orders on the spot the same day.

'The selection process will be fair, transparent and neat. Everybody with the required academic qualifications and physical standards stands an equal chance. We shall work out a procedure for today's selection that satisfies both the candidates and also meets the procedural requirements,' said Khoda.
