Anand (Gujarat), Jan 5 (ANI): Payal Merja, a nine-year-old girl from Anand in Gujarat, has impressed everyone by solving complex mathematical problems in seconds.
This little mathematical wizard, a student of the Bavis Gam Vidyalaya, caught everyone's attention when she won the All Gujarat Mental Arithmetic Championrophy-2008, beating 4500 students from various schools.
In the contest that judged the participants IQ and acumen in calculations, Payal solved 200 mathematical problems in eight minutes with 50 seconds to spare.
The contest was held in December 2008 in Vadodara District.
"I have been fond of mathematics right from the time I began studying. No sooner than my teacher would write a question on the blackboard, I was ready with the answer. I like Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System and that's why I learnt it. Now, I can solve the problems more quickly," claims Payal.
This fifth standard student has evolved her own formula of solving problems. She blinks her eye and taps her fingers while solving the equations and other complex problems of permutations and combinations, literally in a jiffy.
Payal's father Ramesh Merja attributed this quality of genius to her brother Jay from whom she draws inspiration.
"I find that Payal enjoys learning new things and mathematics. She informed me that she wants to learn advanced mathematics. She got inspiration from Jay who scored 99 out of 100 in his Secondary School Certificate examinations," said Ramesh.
As for her other creative traits, Payal likes to draw and dance. However, when it comes to mathematics, she is capable of solving most complicated problems that demand the highest degree of expertise.
At the national level UCMAS competition, Payal had the distinction of being the runners up.
People are sighting Payal as the next Shakuntala Devi, the Indian mathematician renowned for her mastery in solving complex mathematical problems without any mechanical aid including high-tech computers. (ANI)
