Rio Ferdinand wants to become world champion

London, Dec 17 (ANI): Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand wants to become a world champion to seal the most successful year of his career after having domestic and European medals in his trophy cabinet.

Ferdinand dismisses talk of the FIFA Club World Cup being a hindrance to Manchester United's defence of their Premier and Champions League crowns.

United are the only British winners of the old Inter-Continental Cup and Ferdinand wants them to become the first club from the UK to win FIFA's revamped world club competition, the Daily Express reported.

"We want to win it without a doubt. There's no point coming all this way if we don't go back as world champions. You only get to play in this competition if you are successful, so we are delighted to be here," Ferdinand said.

"We want to give a good account of ourselves and come back recognised as the best team in the world.

"In terms of success, 2008 has been my best year as a footballer. It doesn't get much better than winning the Premier League and Champions League double. Now we're looking at being champions of the world. It would be great to start the New Year with another trophy under our belts. We're desperate to win it and that is what I hope we're going to do."

If United can bring home the world crown, it will give further momentum to Ferdinand's mission to carve himself an even deeper niche in the club's history.

With three Premier League winner's medals, plus one each in the Champions League and Carling Cup, is not been a bad return from his first six seasons with the club. But Ferdinand is impatient for much more silver before his contract runs out in 2012. (ANI)
