50 percent vote in Delhi's Rajinder Nagar

National,Politics, Sat, 13 Dec 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Nearly 50 percent of 137,000 eligible voters Saturday exercised their franchise in Delhi's Rajinder Nagar assembly constituency, where elections were postponed after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate committed suicide last month.

Polling in the constituency was moved to this month after outgoing legislator Puran Chand Yogi died days before before Delhi went to the polls Nov 29.

'The voting in Rajinder Nagar was peaceful and we recorded 50 percent polling in the constituency,' said an Election Commission official.

While 12 candidates are in the fray, the fight is expected to be among the BJP, which fielded Yogi's widow Asha Yogi, Bhagwan Das of the Congress and Trilok Chand Sharma of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

The result will be declared Dec 15. Results for the other constituencies were declared last Monday, with the Congress bagging 42 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly and retaining power for a third term.
