Mumbai terror toll: 173 or 179?

Mumbai, Dec 10 (IANS) A day after Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed told the UN that the Mumbai terrorist attacks killed 179 people, a senior Maharashtra official Wednesday put the toll at 173.

 

With the death of another injured victim, the number of dead has risen to 173, including 26 foreigners, state Disaster Management Cell director S.C. Mohanty said.

 

 

The number of injured is 294, including 22 foreigners, Mohanty said. Of this, 82 are undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

 

 

In addition to the civilian casualties, nine terrorists, who India says came from Pakistan, were killed and one was arrested. The terrorist attack began late Nov 26 and ended Nov 29.

 

 

Briefing a special session of the UN Security Council Tuesday, minister Ahamed said: '179 persons, including 26 foreigners, lost their lives while 296 persons including 22 foreigners suffered injuries in the attack, which was designed to kill and maim as many people as possible.'
