Jalandhar, Dec 9 (IANS) In the aftermath of the terror strike in Mumbai, radical Sikh organisation Dal Khalsa Tuesday postponed its conclave on the problem posed by migrants coming to Punjab.
Dal Khalsa leaders H.S. Dhami and Kanwarpal Singh said here the conclave was being postponed for at least two months in view of the heightened tension between India and Pakistan following the Nov 26 Mumbai terror attack.
The conclave was to be held here Dec 14.
The Dal Khalsa is a known opponent of unrestricted influx of migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh into Punjab. It claims that the migrants were a multi-million rupee threat to Punjab's economy and they were coming here for jobs and sending the earnings to their home states.
'Since the issue is sensitive and serious in nature and the prevailing atmosphere is not conducive to discuss it, we have decided to postpone the conference for two months,' Kanwarpal Singh told IANS.
The organisation asked both India and Pakistan to show restraint even after the Mumbai carnage in which 172 people lost their lives and nearly 250 were injured.
'We urge the UN and the US to intervene and defuse the crisis between India and Pakistan. Those advocating that India should bomb Pakistan to avenge the Mumbai attacks should understand that neither India is powerful like the US nor is Pakistan weak like Afghanistan,' the Dal Khalsa leaders said.
They added that a war in this situation was not good to anyone and people should avoid falling into the trap of politicians wanting to arouse nationalism for political reasons.
