India, Germany to discuss global financial meltdown

National, Mon, 17 Nov 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) India and Germany will discuss the role of emerging economies in the wake of the global financial meltdown when German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier comes here on a three-day visit starting Wednesday.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will discuss a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues with his German counterpart Thursday.

The crisis in the world's financial markets and the future international role played by India and other emerging economies will be the main focus of his talks, a spokesman for the German minister said in Berlin.

Reforms of global financial institutions and the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan will also figure in discussions, official sources said here.

Steinmeier will also call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discuss with him India's role in stemming the global financial downslide. Germany is among European countries that has been hit hard by the meltdown that originated in the US and soon enveloped developed European countries.

The German minister will also travel to Bangalore, India's IT hub, where he will open a German consulate.
