The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was arrested on Saturday (November 15) after he surrendered himself in connection with a non-bailable warrant issued by a Jamshedpur court but, granted bail by the Mazagaon court in Mumbai.
Earlier in the afternoon, Thackeray surrendered before the magistrate in want of a non-bailable warrant, but the court granted him a transit bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000.
However, the court refused to grant transit remand to prosecution for Raj Thackeray to produce him in Jamshedpur court. With this bail, he can himself travel from Mumbai to Jamshedpur without police custody on November 17.
The non-bailable warrant was issued on September 30 by the Jamshedpur court for his alleged inflammatory speeches against the north-Indian living in Mumbai and Biharis in particular.
This apart, there are a couple of other cases registered against him, including the one filed by an advocate, Hameed Raza for allegedly abusing Chhat festival of Bihar thereby hurting religious sentiments of the people of Bihar.
The counsel of Jharkhand is now appealing for exemption from his personal appearance in Jamshedpur court citing threat to his life.
In recent times Maharashtra, particularly the city of Mumbai, has witnessed string of violence by the MNS activists against the non-maharashtrians drawing criticism from all quarters for divisive politics and subsequently the failure of law and order.
