As was expected, the Gujjar agitations had come out of Rajasthan, the epicentre of upheaval and engulfed the Delhi and the National Capital Region, like the last year when Gujjar agitators had rocked the Delhi and NCR.
Gujjars had called for bandh in NCR on Thursday whose impact would naturally have to fall on Delhi and NCR and cripple the traffic. A high alert has been declared in NCR by the Union Home Ministry. The Centre has exhorted UP, Haryana, and Delhi to keep utmost vigilance and take precautionary measures to keep anti-social elements in control, if they resort to violent activities.
Acting on Gujjar community's call for 'NCR Roko', security has been tightened under precautionary measures and additional forces have been deployed at borders, high ways and other vulnerable spots in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad to prevent any mishappening.
The NCR Roko has been called by All India Gujjar Mahasabha in support of the community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status in Rajasthan where more than three dozen people were killed six days ago in clashes between the police and protesters.
Gujjars are chiefly present in south and east Delhi, the police have flooded the area with their presence to contain any kind of violence. A senior police officer said the Delhi Police are in constant touch with the Haryana and UP police and are sharing information to help each other in the adjoining states, if any kind of violent activities take place.
Over 35,000 police personnel have been deployed in the Delhi and neighbouring areas particularly in Gujjars' stronghold. Local policemen and paramilitary personnel are also deployed in adjoining Faridabad, Gurgaon (both in Haryana), and Noida and Ghaziabad (both in Uttar Pradesh).
Reports are also coming from Rajasthan that a section of Gujjars have requested the community leader K S Bainsala to call off the agitation demanding for ST status and resort to dialogue with the state government to settle the issue in a peaceful manner.
Meanwhile the Central Government had returned the letter to Rajasthan government, in which Chief Minster Vasundhara Raje had recommended quota for Gujjars as part of a nomadic tribe under the category of de-notified tribes, different from Schedule Caste category.
The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after taking advice from the Ministry of Law and Justice returned the letter to Raje government citing many faults in the recommendations and to provide nomadic status to Gujjars as against the constitution.
It is almost going to complete a week for the Gujjars' agitations on May 29. State Government of Rajasthan has so far been failed to tackle the protests, which was basically initiated by the Vasundhara Raje herself when in 2003 elections, she promised the Gujjar Community of ST status. That careless promise based on vote bank politics has created complications for the country and the people are facing major crisis today.
