The ILA 2008(Air Show) this year would be graced by the performance of the IAF's helicopter aerobatics display team 'Sarang'. The show is to be held in Berlin from 27 May till 01 Jun 08. This outstanding team has 14 officers and 32 airmen, led by the commanding officer, Wing Commander Shashank Mishra.
The team is also scheduled to perform in various other displays in England including Biggin Hill Air Show at Biggin Hill (an airfield just south of London) on 07-08 Jun 08, Waddington Air Show on 05-06 Jul, 08 and Fairland Royal International Air Tattoo on 12-13 Jul 08. The last one is being organised to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force. Finally, a display in the Farnborough International Air Show will bring a termination to the team's lofty tour.
With only a little experience in the display field, the team was able to scheme and finally dispense a three helicopter display file in a very short time span. The high profile journey started with the first display of Sarang team during the Asian Aerospace at Singapore in 2004. The display won worldwide appreciation and earned the team rave feedbacks by the media. The team moved on to become a four helicopter team and by now it has performed and participated in numerous display shows in India and abroad.
In 2005, the team won the highest honour when it was acknowledged as one amongst the ten best display teams in the world. The Team is a regular participant during the bi-annual Aero India International air show held at Air Force Station Yelahanka. Other than this, the Team undertakes displays during various prestigious events such as Air Force Day, National Defence Academy Passing out Parade, and other events of national and international.
India felt a sudden need of showcasing its professionalism as India's Aviation Industry has progressed a lot and this exactly was the aim of the formation of 'Sarang' Helicopter Display Team, formed in mar 2002. The name ‘Sarang’ was chosen for the team, as the Peacock is one of the most enchanting birds and epitomizes beauty and grace which is also the hallmark of the Team’s display. The Team’s helicopters have been painted in a unique paint scheme which utilizes bright colours with a peacock from imposed on it.
