The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has made the government responsible for the recent violence that broke out in Darrang and Udalguri districts of Assam. It also alleged that New Delhi has tried their best to create a panic situation in the State as like in Iraq and Afghanistan such that they can go for assault across Asom. In its fortnightly mouthpiece, Freedom, the outfit also highlighted the pathetic condition of the people living in the relief cams in the troubles districts of middle Assam.
"Recent communal conflict between the Bodos and Muslims in Darrang District of Asom has resulted in loss of many lives and livestock, damage and destruction of properties. Many of the victims are now taking shelter in camps loosing everything they had. It is extremely distressing that minimum basic needs of these unfortunate people have not been met yet. They have to spend days and nights under the sky getting soaked in rain as there is no roof has been built to shelter them. There is no baby food or any arrangement for the school children to take their lessons," it said.
Mentionable that the group clashes that erupted in the first week of October left over 50 killed. More over, the hostility between the Bodo tribes people and immigrant Bangladeshis in four districts of Assam (Udalguri, Darrang, Baksa and Chirang) left hundreds wounded and thousands families with women and minor children in the relief camps.
The incident was surprising because nobody outside the localities under the Bodo territorial council apprehended about it. Not to speak of common people, the police and intelligence department also failed to understand and predict the growing intolerance between the two communities since August. The Bangladeshi settlers were angry with local Bodos in some areas of Udalguri and Darrang, as they opposed an agitational program, sponsored by the Muslims, during the middle of August.
The government tried hard to take the situation under control. Thousands of police, army and paramilitary troops were deployed in the strife torn areas. The army and paramilitary forces continued to stage flag march in the affected areas for continuously for many days. Army choppers were also engaged for air surveillance. Even curfew was clamped for more than a week, though it was relaxed during day time as the situation started improving.
The Freedom editorial, which has been sent to media persons today, also alleged that there was 'no real attempt to trace of many missing persons'. A number of dead bodies have not been identified yet. Most of the people sheltering in the camps are so frightened that they do not have the courage to return to their respective homes. From the either side of the divide of the conflict, people are apprehensive of attacks from each other, it added.
Criticizing the political leaders of the country the editorial also narrated, "Few leaders of Government sponsored organisation and some leaders of political party acquiescing to colonial Indian electoral process in an attempt to hide this truth are playing a blame game of blaming each other. Such contradictions temporarily help their electoral prospects in the coming election, but, no good will come to the masses. The masses are becoming more apprehensive, party leaders using the clash to further their political aim making selfish comments, spreading disinformation for propaganda value."
"A ground has been prepared to attack across Asom to create an Iraq and Afghanistan like situation to unsettle our people by blaming the current situation on the International Islamic fundamentalist. In this planning few sectarian politicians and officers the united command structure has joined hands," it asserted.
The outfit, whose prominent leaders including its military chief Paresh Baruah are hiding in Bangladesh for a long time, also claimed that the political parties like Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress were targeting the indigenous Assamese Muslims as the illegal Bangladeshi migrants. It described, "The aim of Bharatiya Janata Party is to get support from the Bodo politicians in the forthcoming Parliamentary election.
However, whom the Indian Congress and the BJP attacking and threatening as illegal Bangladeshi migrants conspiring to strengthen their electoral vote bank are actually indigenous Assamese Muslims who fought against the Moguls at Saraighat in preserving the sovereignty of Asom, at historical Pothorughat against the British and gave life to safeguard the Assamese language."
"In the Indian colonial political game of chess the simple and poor Bodos and the Assamese Muslims have become the pawns. The same conspiracy has lead to shedding of blood in Karbi Hills and North Cachar. With this scheme of things the Indian colonial power has made the Assamese nation a moribund one. The collective struggle to establish the sovereign independence through a just solution has been scuttled with many dirty tricks. The Indian colonial administration has been tending to keep the religious and ethnic divide kettle boiling, so that our various tribes and races belonging to different faiths and religions fail to unite to secure their collective rights and interests," the editorial exposed.
The newsletter also emphasized their views regarding the illegal Bangladeshi migrants that ULFA leaders 'oppose any kind of intrusion in Asom'. Not only Bangladeshi intruders, migrants from India along with Nepal must be identified and deported. Illegal occupational Indian rulers could never deport intruders from Asom. Hence to resist intrusion the restoration of Asom's sovereignty is utmost necessary in Asom, it added.
